Is that an Emmy in your pocket?

I watched the Emmy's last night. I liked what I saw:

  • the intro with Jimmy Fallon & the Glee kids singing Springsteen was superb
  • some of my favorites won (!):
  • Best Drama: Mad Men
  • Best Comedy: Modern Family
  • Outstanding Supporting Actor, Comedy: Cameron Tucker ... I mean, Eric Stonestreet
  • Outstanding Nonfiction Series: The National Parks: America's Best Idea (which beat out Life and Deadliest Catch ... touche!)
  • Outstanding Guest on a Comedy Series: Betty White, SNL
  • Outstanding Made for Television Movie: Temple Grandin
  • Clair Danes, David Strathairn, Julia Ormond winning for Temple Grandin
  • the big misses were ... Conan O'Brien & Christina Hendricks leaving empty handed
  • lastly, if you have not seen The National Parks: America's Best Idea and/ or Temple Grandin, you should.

Old School v. New School

I walked 4 miles today; it got me to thinking about how my philosophies have changed in the past five years:

  • on competition:
  • old school - winning is the only option
  • new school - who competes?

  • on slowing down:
  • old school - slowing down is for chumps
  • new school - slowing down is the only way

  • on sweating:
  • old school - sign of a good workout
  • new school - sign to stop all physical activity

  • on the temperature:
  • old school - the hotter it is outside, the better the workout
  • new school - it's hot out? I'm staying inside

  • on walking:
  • old school - losers walk; winners run
  • new school - avoid running at any cost

No List [Confession] Friday

Confession: my favorite bookmarks ...

I came, I saw, I ran

I did a 5k yesterday evening; I made a pros v. cons list.

Cons ... my only complaints:
  • no t-shirt - granted probably one of the last things I need is another race t-shirt, but for a $20.00 entry fee? ... show me the t-shirt!
  • double loop course - I did a handful (plus a few more) races last summer/ fall, and none of them were a double loop course; I don't know what it was exactly, I just wasn't a fan.
  • I am out of shape
  • I loathe running

  • evening race - I did one evening race last summer, and I really enjoyed that one, too. It was nice not to be up early on a Saturday morning for a change.
  • flat course
  • good playlist
  • nice weather
  • good company
  • post race food - instead of the typical fruit & water like other smaller races ... they fed us well yesterday. Treats included: oranges, Chick-fil-A, hot dogs, chips, water, and Gatorade
  • iced towels! - as soon as you finished the race, you were handed an iced towel ... very refreshing ... and elitist feeling

On the Fly

Remember yesterday when I was excited about drinking some brews? In typical, "joke's on me" fashion, I had forgotten that I am doing a twilight 5k tonight (note: 'twilight' not 'Twilight'). Not too long ago, this would not have interfered with my drinking plans at all, but these days I am old, boring, and not as spry as I once was. Thus, there was no beer consumption last night.

Today, has consisted of tracking down my favorite running shorts, drinking some Gatorade, and making a new running playlist for the ol' iPod:

  • Florence + the Machine - Dog Days Are Over
  • B.o.B - Magic
  • Black Eyed Peas - One Tribe
  • Modest Mouse - Float On
  • DMB - Alligator Pie
  • Eminem - Not Afraid
  • Eminem - Welcome to Detroit City
  • O.A.R. - Fool in the Rain
  • Jay-Z - On To the Next One
  • MGMT - Electric Feel
  • Vampire Weekend - Horchata
  • Michael Jackson - Dirty Diana
  • Phoenix - Lisztomania

Nothing wrong with being productive. I built my own 6 pack this afternoon. It is cooling now; the forecast for this evening is hazy. The aforementioned 6 pack includes:

... no High Life for this kid today.

Life in the Doldrums

I have been in a bit of a rut lately, but I am trying to make cocktails out of water. (Does that make sense?) While I have been all mopey, I have been reading. In the past week I have finished 3 books that have been in progress for some time. All were enjoyable reads.

River of Dreams

Long, long ago LiLu was in a competition of sorts, and had to write about the 3 musical moments that have impacted her life the most. After reading her post, I started thinking ... and it took me all of 15 seconds or so to compile my list.

  • Billy Joel; River of Dreams tape; Sony Walkman; my dad's fishing boat. My dad used to take me fishing with him when I was a kid. The problem was we would have to leave really early in the morning, and I would get bored after about 5 minutes of not catching anything. Thus, us fishing usually consisted of my dad actually fishing, and me curled up on the bow of the boat for a mid-morning nap. One of my favorite childhood memories is doing just this, laying in the warm summer sun, listening to Billy Joel's River of Dreams on my Sony Walkman. What 9 year-old loves Billy Joel? ... this kid.

  • Wallflowers; Counting Crows; VA Beach Amphitheater; my first real concert ... with my parents. When I was in middle school, my parents took my sister and me to see the Wallflowers & Counting Crows concert at the VA Beach Amphitheater. It was a crisp night, I was in love with Jakob Dylan, my sister ended up falling asleep at some point, I wasn't mortified that I was with my parents, Adam Duritz dropped the f- bomb more than once ... excellent first concert.

  • First cd player; Alanis Morissette; Presidents of the United States of America. In the 7th grade, I saved up money for what seemed like forever in order to purchase my first cd player. I settled on a Magnavox boombox from Circuit City, that was on sale (... this may have been the beginning of my frugal ways as well.) As an added bonus, my mom let me pick out 2 cd's. Thus, my first 2 cd's were Jagged Little Pill and Presidents of the United States of America ... great choices, I know.

  • Honorable Mention: Last year, when I sailed from Virginia down to Miami, FL with the EYE boys, we had a set shift schedule. For whatever reason (anchored, or in port), it just worked out that I never had a watch shift for the morning sunrise (5.00am - 8.00am). That is, until we were off the coast of Florida. I was excited to say the least. Shortly after I was on watch, I realized there was an endless wall of clouds on the horizon. There was no morning sun peaking over the horizon. I got to see the night slowly fade to an overcast morning ... and it happened while Rusted Root's 'Send Me On My Way' blasted through my iPod. Spectacular? -Not really. Memorable? -Definitely.

Go Without, Dear Child

Why do I do these things to myself? I think it is a sign that I am bored. Whatever the case, I have decided to do the following for the next month (starting yesterday): not to purchase any food, drinks, or alcohol from restaurants, bars, fast food joints, pizza places, gas stations, homeless people, 7-Elevan's, coffee places, ect.

Thus, until 15 September I will not be visiting:
  • Starbucks
  • Dunkin' Donuts
  • Chipotle
  • Five Guys
  • Panera
  • Tropical Smoothie
  • Subway
  • Subway Station
  • Anna's
  • Vinny's
  • Wendy's
  • Dairy Queen
  • Chick-fil-A
  • Wawa
  • 7-Elevan
  • Sonic
  • Taco Bell
  • McDonald's
  • Marker 20
  • Crab Shack
... bring on the fun.
